Founded in the first year of Kansei era (1789), the heritage brewery Fueki Shoyu runs this experience-oriented facility, “Kinbue Shoyu Park.” A soy sauce brewery with over 230 years of history delivers “eat, learn, play, buy” all at once, letting you take in soy sauce as a full experience. Factory tour “Kinbue Shoyu Gakko,” a restaurant serving dishes built around soy sauce (“Shoyu Gura Restaurant”), a direct-sales shop with soy sauce-themed sweets, and a play area for kids to run off steam — the whole setup keeps every age engaged.

Walking the park, you find a viewing corner with soy sauce fermenting in massive cedar barrels, the “Wanpaku Hiroba” playground, soy sauce Baumkuchen and soft-serve for sale at the shop. The traffic flow is well designed — no getting lost. Works with kids on both weekdays and weekends.

The iconic item: soy sauce soft-serve. Soy sauce’s sweet-salty character meets vanilla, and the first bite reads as “oh, regular sweet soft-serve” — then the umami catches up behind. An unusual-order experience. Ordered out of curiosity, by the end I was wondering if another cone was possible — basically a trap.

The kids unambiguously win at the playground, “Wanpaku Hiroba”. Wide open lawn, swings, a beam walk, and — standout — a treehouse built from a wooden barrel, using materials from the brewing process. The barrel-as-treehouse design is especially fun, and adults quietly feel the urge to climb it too.

Kinbue Shoyu Gakko” is the factory-tour program. The view of 38 enormous cedar barrels fermenting soy sauce is striking, and you listen to the explanation while touching raw materials — soybeans, wheat, koji mold. Reservations preferred, walk-ins also accepted.

When he happens to be guiding, company president Kichigoro-san is particularly well-loved. He speaks about the future of soy sauce with heat, but also lightly, so adults can enjoy this as straight learning. I was worried kids might check out during the tour, but the scale of the barrels and the atmosphere of the factory kept them in surprisingly well.

The park’s “Shoyu Gura Restaurant” uses Kawajima rice and a menu built around soy sauce. Places where you can taste soy sauce as “the lead” rather than a seasoning are rare, and eating here tends to become a highlight of the trip.
