The famous croissant toast arrives at Japan’s Costco
The “croissant toast” that’s been making waves in the US — the LA BOULANGERIE brand out of San Francisco — is now on the shelves at Costco Japan. Through the bag it looks like an ordinary square loaf, but peek at the cross-section and you’ll see the unmistakable croissant layering. Even the butter aroma drifts faintly through the plastic.
A hefty 2-pack for ¥1,498
Open the bag and you get two 425g loaves. Pick one up single-handed and you’ll let out a small “whoa” at the weight. Each piece is about 10cm square and 2.5cm thick — a single loaf is enough to feed a family’s breakfast. If you can’t finish it, it freezes well, so slicing to your preferred thickness and stashing in the freezer is the classic move.
Beautiful layers — and the occasional “big hole”
The draw of this bread is the layer structure in the cross-section. Butter has been folded through the dough repeatedly — the craft shows immediately.
One caveat: there’s variation between loaves. Apparently some come with a huge hollow cavity near the top, leaving the interior nearly empty. Giving one a gentle heft before you buy — checking for any “too light” feel — might help avoid disappointment.
It transforms in a toaster
Just like “TOAST ME!” on the packaging says — this bread was made to be toasted. The surface goes crisp, the inside puffs up, and the butter aroma fills the kitchen in seconds. You can eat it as-is, but toasted is dramatically better. Even on busy mornings, it’s worth the toaster pass.
Value and versatility
At ¥1,498 (tax incl.), it’s on the higher end even by Costco standards. But considering the quality and volume, it earns it. Plain with butter and jam for breakfast, used for sandwiches, leftovers turned into French toast — the range of uses is a real strong point. When you’re buying large at Costco, having less worry about “will we finish this?” is a quietly important plus.
